3-4 ADAR History Essay - 1461 Words

Many Air Defense units today have a long history that runs deep with accolades and awards. One of these units is 3-4-ADAR. Third Battalion (Bn.) Fourth Air Defense Artillery Regiment (3-4 ADAR) is the most decorated Air Defense unit in the world. The Air Defense Branch is a relatively young branch by comparison. The ADA Branch originates from the Field Artillery Branch. AD did not become a branch of its own until technology advances made it necessary for a change. As plains started becoming a part of combat, the more need there was for AD. (U.S. Army Center of Military History) Before the start of the Mexican-American War, there were only four companies equipped with light artillery. Most of their light horse artillerymen were equipped with six pound, smoothbore bronze guns. Company D, 4th Bn. (a predecessor of 3-4 ADAR) was one of these units. On 3 March 1847, three more companies became equipped as light horse artillerymen. (The Mexican-American War, 1846-1848) 3-4 ADAR participated in eight battles during the Mexican War. The battles accredited to the unit during this time are Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterey, Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Chapultepec, and Tamaulipas.
